If you are not ready for a full outdoor room, the patio is a close cousin. A patio can provide a place to relax and recreate in the warmer months, but you can also create some very cozy winter patios as well in tandem with fire elements mentioned below. And patios do not have to be adjacent to the house. They can be designed as quiet little retreats elsewhere on the property, centered around smaller wood arbors with screens or simply using nearby trees and plants for shading. With nice stone work and a little gardening, you can create a wonderful place for conversation, outdoor meals, or just a spot to relax and read or doze off in the afternoon.
